Happy Kazakhstan’s Republic Day!
Today, Kazakhstan celebrates Republic Day to commemorate the day 35 years ago when it became a republic within the Soviet Union. We tell you more about the holiday.
Today’s holiday is a national holiday commemorating a pivotal moment in the country’s history. On October 25, 1990, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Kazakhstan, also known as the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR, was adopted by a resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR of the XII convocation. This historic document proclaimed the sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR, laying the political and legal foundations for Kazakhstan’s development as an independent state.
The Declaration emphasized the republic’s right to determine its own political, economic, and cultural future, paving the way for full independence. Building upon the principles set forth in this document, Kazakhstan later adopted the Constitutional Law ‘On State Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan’ on December 16, 1991, marking the country’s full emergence as an independent nation.
In 1995, October 25 was officially recognized as Republic Day, honoring the adoption of the Declaration and its role in the nation’s path to statehood. Republic Day stands today as a symbol of Kazakhstan’s sovereignty, unity, and national pride.
